Mary Robinson has practiced in the field of lawyer professional responsibility since her 1992 appointment as Administrator of the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, where, for 15 years, she was responsible for developing and implementing policies for enforcement of the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct and directing investigations and prosecutions of alleged attorney misconduct. During that time, she developed a nationwide network of relationships and participated in a host of initiatives aimed at defining a future for the legal profession where the value of service to clients is enhanced and the quality of life for lawyers is improved. Since leaving the ARDC in 2007, she has been advising lawyers and law firms facing ethical challenges, defending lawyers in ARDC investigations and prosecutions, representing judges facing disciplinary inquiries and charges, and providing expert witness services in matters involving lawyer ethics, while continuing to take part in local and national endeavors aimed at improving the profession.

Ms. Robinson appreciates the unique opportunity she has had to take part in the development of lawyer ethics as its own field of law, a field that barely existed when she graduated with one of the last accredited law school classes to earn J.D.’s without having taken a class in professional responsibility. She practiced law for fifteen years, primarily in criminal and appellate work, before encountering the world of lawyer discipline when appointed as a Commissioner of the ARDC in 1989. Once she assumed the ARDC Administrator position three years later, Ms. Robinson never left the field, proceeding from her 15-year tenure in discipline to developing a practice that includes representing lawyers in all matters where ethical obligations must be addressed either proactively or in response to some challenge.

Ms. Robinson firmly believes that application of the rules and principles of lawyer ethics in any one context benefits from an understanding of applications in other contexts, and she is proud of this firm’s ability to merge significant experience in multiple settings to best serve our lawyer clients and the continued development of the law.

Ms. Robinson’s client base has ranged from solo practitioners who represent consumers to partners in major law firms who provide sophisticated legal services for major corporate clients. It has included general counsel for small and large corporations and for governmental entities along with individual government and in-house lawyers striving to address ethical issues. Ms. Robinson has also represented several technology firms that support legal services.

Ms. Robinson is not currently accepting new engagements, but she remains available to the other attorneys of the firm for consultation on client matters.
